My newest book was inspired by my love of scuba diving and traveling to my favorite place on earth—Bonaire. I’m passionate about sharing the ocean’s beauty with those who may never see it firsthand, because “people protect what they love.” When I recently discovered the wreck of the Mairi Bhan, I couldn’t stop imagining the people who once sailed her, and their story soon began to take shape.

Probably the unsolved case of The Vanishing Reading Glasses—last seen on my head—or the baffling disappearance of my car keys that always end up in the fridge. It’s part mystery, part comedy, with a dash of ‘how did that even happen'?

When writer’s block hits, I’ve learned the best remedy is to step away from the keyboard and go live a little. Traveling to new places, meeting people with fresh perspectives, and saying “yes” to unexpected experiences always sparks new story ideas. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple conversation with a stranger, or wandering a place I’ve never been—to untangle the next chapter in my head.

I’m currently in the early stages of Beneath Bonaire, a women’s fiction novel set on my favorite Caribbean island. It follows a group of women whose lives intertwine through sunken treasure, small-town gossip, and the bonds of friendship. There’s a bit of mystery and plenty of island charm. If you love stories that feel like a vacation, this one’s for you!

She closed the final page, smiled, and reached for her next book, only to find the shelf empty. The horror sunk in, she was book-less.

I’d love to visit Haven Point from RaeAnne Thayne’s books. I’ve never been to Maine, but the idea of a small coastal town where everyone knows your name and has a story to tell, sounds like the perfect escape. I’d spend my days walking the shoreline and finding a cozy café to write in.

Inspiration strikes me from all directions—sometimes it’s a quiet moment, other times it’s a conversation with a friend that won’t leave my mind. I’ve been inspired by a single sentence in a book, wishing the author had taken the story somewhere else—and realizing maybe I could. Travel is a big one, too. A trip can plant the seed of a character or setting that grows into an entire story. I think of writing like diving: the surface might look calm, but once you’re in, there’s a whole world waiting to be explored.

This summer, I'm diving into Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand. No one captures beach drama quite like she does. I'm also reading Seabreeze Honeymoon by Jan Moran. Sunshine, second chances, and seaside romance. Both pair perfectly with a cold drink, a hammock, and absolutely no plans.

Write the story only you can tell. Don’t chase trends—write what lights you up inside. Writing can feel lonely, but you’re not alone. Find a few trusted people who support your voice and your vision. Be open to feedback, but stay true to your story. You’ll never feel fully “ready,” so start now and keep going, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.
Also, writing is rewriting. Your first draft isn’t supposed to be perfect—it’s supposed to exist. Finish it, take a breath, then revise with purpose. Every word you write makes you a better writer.
Finally, don’t wait for permission to call yourself a writer. If you’re writing, you’re a writer.

I love hearing from readers. Many tell me they've never seen the ocean! I love when I get inspired for a story line and have to stop everything to jot down my idea!
