Kate came to me on book tour in Oregon. She was a young woman who’d grown up on Oregon ranches during the Depression while her father was a migrant ranch foreman. My friend in Ashland works with the historical society and helped me find accounts of ranch life during that era. It was a tough life!

I think when I'm writing - and it doesn't feel fresh or exciting - I stand back and think what's missing here, what's not on fire? I et that feeling stay. After awhile it often comes to me that the characters motivation isn't coming through to me or on the page. That makes me think hard and once the motivation for each character gets clear I'm off.
