Firstly, my energy, my inspiration, comes from the inequalities that first confronted me as a child. An escape let’s say. I want others to see other possibilities, alternative futures. Secondly, I love crafting emotive landscapes and spaces that readers can immerse themselves in, to feel, smell and explore. Streets, buildings, rooms, down to the tiniest artefacts. All are characters in their own right.

Life is not perfect, nor is writing. Make a start, plan, but don’t over-plan. Let your characters lead the way. The best writing comes when characters and their relationships collide and write themselves. My advice is to give them that autonomy and see where it goes. Best thing, the liberation the word can wield to reinvent real lives. I’m never happier than when delicately painting, layer on layer, word on word, wonderfully flawed and complex heroines and heroes who’ll challenge their world whilst moving the reader and author to reimagine ours.

Experiences have taught me the value of identifying shared feelings and seeing things differently, through other’s eyes. Empathy. I’ve still a lot to learn here, and I’m by no means an expert. Yet, slipping inside a character helps me (them) make a step through the inevitable abyss of writer’s block when it comes my way.
