Meditation. I become one with my characters' souls and ask them what would move them forward in their current predicament.

I wrote The Surrency Affair about my wife's great grandparents' murder in 1936. When I began to research the facts of the case, there were a lot of things that caused consternation over the true motive for murder. I began to fantasize the souls of the victims, John and Mayme Surrency, were reincarnated as my wife and myself. It was my sole purpose in life to bring to light the truth. That has led to my current work. I'm 80k words into the first draft, and really like the story.

I find the mornings are my most creative. It's as though my writing is a continuation of my subconscious thoughts during sleep.

Write every day. Obsess over your characters. Bring them into your consciousness constantly. Live their lives, and have them live yours. Understand and value all human interaction.

As writers, we get to immortalize our thoughts. A thousand years from now someone can read something we wrote, and have a personal conversation with us. I find that quite thrilling.

I'm on a Truman Capote kick right now. I've just finished Breakfast at Tiffany's, and have begun In Cold Blood.
I must say, Breakfast at Tiffany's was much more disturbing to read than the Audrey Hepburn movie. But it made me think. That's for sure.

On our first date, my wife told me the story of her great-grandparents who were murdered in Jacksonville, FL on November 25, 1936. All she knew of the case was that it was a contract-killing and the man who contracted the murder was the first in the US to be convicted of murder. he appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court, and lost. Twenty three years later, as I've reached a semi-retired state, I've begun pursuing my passion for writing. My wife suggested I look into the Surrency Affair. Once I began looking into all the facts and circumstances of the murder, it was obvious there were other forces at play. The finished novella is called, The Surrency Affair, and is listed in my book section.
