I got inspired to write through reading consistently. As I saw how others framed their thoughts around a subject matter, I determined I wanted to begin writing more. Certainly having to write papers for school gets you in the discipline of writing. Beyond that, I wrote a small, self-published work on the Fruit of the Spirit, and then started blogging more regularly. As I entered my doctoral studies, I determined I wanted to write on missionary care and was able to find the opportunity for my dissertation to be turned into a book for churches and individuals to use.

Just start writing . . . begin with a blog, personal journal, or writing down a daily reflection. It doesn't have to be something you publish in the public, but at least to get you in the habit or writing and crafting your thoughts. As you get to a place to publish more public, have others read first and provide feedback. Don't be afraid to allow others to speak into your writing and help sharpen you as you develop your skill.

I tend to step away from what I am writing or read some more around the topic I am writing on or a similar topic, such that it might give me ideas and direction to pick up and write.

Having served for 13 years as a missions pastor in the local church, I noticed the need to develop a strategy for churches of varying sizes to care for their missionaries. I wanted to provide a biblical foundation for such care, personal testimonies on what is helpful from the field perspective, and give resources that churches (of any size) could use to catalyze care in their own context.
