Pamela Ditchoff My most recent book, the novella, Phoebe's Way, came from my years of volunteering as a Saint John Ambulance Therapy dog team.
Pamela Ditchoff Many ways. I suggest to my students that they read newspapers and magazines; listen in on conversations in eateries or the park; look at photographs; volunteer in an area of your interest--then ask "What if?"
Pamela Ditchoff I'm working on a novel about a young woman from a Salvation Army family living in Toronto at the turn of the century. The family boards the Empress of Ireland to attend the International Salvation Army Conference in London in May of 1914.
Pamela Ditchoff The best thing about being a writer at this point in my life is that I have time to write! This was not always the case; raising three children, working as a copywriter and a teacher, did not allow me long, quiet periods of creative inspiration. I wrote short stories and poetry in those years. I wrote my first novel when my youngest was 16. No regrets; I have greats kids.
Pamela Ditchoff I must confess I rarely experience writer's block. Perhaps this is because when I have an idea for a new work, I research every aspect I can imagine, imagine possible structures, characters . . . by the time I am ready to begin chapter one nothing is blocked. When I have a blocked day, I go for a long walk or drive and take a notepad with me.
