This isn't a cop out but I have absolutely no idea! Recently, I've become more interested in the way in which family, in all its permutations, can influence for good or ill. I guess this is what could have drawn me to my story. However the narrative is much more crime orientated than my previous novels (with female main protagonists.) My main character plays detective - she's a police officer's daughter - and I just fancied the idea of writing a detective style story without it becoming a full blown police procedural. Having said this, I took advice on procedure from a retired senior police officer.

I'm a news junkie. Sometimes it's the odd offbeat article or news report that will grab my attention. I then apply the 'What if...' scenario and bingo!

I've literally just finished a novel, which my agent has submitted to my editor at Harper Collins. It's a standalone with female lead and falls most appropriately into the crime fiction genre. The working title is 'Sleeping With Strangers'. No doubt there will be a round or two of edits. I also have ideas for another Josh Thane novel.

Meeting really interesting people in other walks of life. I love talking to individuals who feel passionately about what they do and I've met a few of those - from firearms officers, helicopter pilots and police officers to those who work with refugees and victims of conflict.

I haven't really experienced it. If I did, I'd spend time with friends, go and visit somewhere new. The trick, I think, would be to focus on anything but writing.
