Upon a time once real, but now forgotten, at the earliest days of coal-fired industrialization, captains of industry knew their endeavors would lead to a changed world, a changed humanity, and none of it for the better. They were warned but did not listen.

I would travel to Dublin, Ireland in the early twentieth century, find James Joyce's character Stephen Daedalus, and make him wake up!

Same as I got when I was 23 years old and hitchhiked 100 miles to attend a gathering in D.C. on DuPont Circle. After revealing that I'd been writing an epic fantasy novel (unpublished as yet) I got this unsolicited advice: "Keep writing and honing your skills. But wait until you are older and have gathered life experiences worth writing about." At the time it seemed unwelcome, but in retrospect, I am glad to have kept at the writing for many years. Now that I have lots more to say, I think I know how to do it.

Ancient Greek writers spoke of their muse. It's something like that for me. I've developed a process for tapping into my unconscious mind. One of my practices is, when I am unclear about where to go with a story, character, or worl of non-fiction, I intentionally ask a question before going to sleep, and I go to sleep with that question in mind. Most times I find the way forward the next day. It just comes to me like it was always there. As for what to write about -- that is inspired by constant curiosity, study, meditation on ideas.

Long story. I wrote the first draft of "OGDEN," Chapter One many years ago. I didn't know where it might go, so I put it aside. Since 2006, I have been a pioneer is developing and helping communities enact laws recognizing legal rights for nature. I was a community organizer advising the first community on Earth to adopt such a law. As the Rights of Nature Movement surprisingly went global afterward, my involvement has grown very deep. Out of this work grew the kernel of the story of OGDEN/
