Mark, Could you please kill off the Ed Kealty character already? After all, it's pretty obvious that he's a thinly-veiled fictitious version of Ted Kennedy, who croaked several years ago. Thanks for your consideration!
Mark Greaney After 7 Tom Clancy novels in 6 years, it was time to let others pick up the mantle. Mike Madden has a jack Jr. book coming out this month, and Marc Cameron has a Jack Sr book coming out at Christmas.

Kealty hasn't been involved in the books since Locked On, so bringing him back after 7 novels, reintroducing him, would take a lot of work for arguably little gain. Not saying one of the new guys might not take it on.

Mark, you have an Irish surname that a dear relative has as well. Are your ancestors from the Pennsylvania area by any chance?
Mark Greaney I do have some relatives in PA. I'm not close with them but remember someone pointing it out once.

Do you have an endgame for The Gray Man, or will the series continue indefinitely?
Mark Greaney No endgame in mind- I'd like to keep writing for awhile at least.

Love "Commander In Chief". Five Stars! Excellent listen (Audible User :>) ). You did an excellent job of juggling all the players and Scott Brick did a great job making the Novel a true smorgasbord of listening pleasure. When thinking through the timeline while looking at the newspapers today, it makes me believe you have to be a psychic in your spare time. When is the next chapter, I can't wait?

Hi Mark! As a long-time Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn fan, I was so delighted to discover The Gray Man series. Any plans or discussion to put Court Gentry on the big screen? He's the most compelling character I've encountered in a long time. Keep up the great work!
Mark Greaney There are plans for a film, but the studio looks like they might depart greatly from the original story. I'd rather not post links but you can google the book title and Sony and see what I mean.

I just finished COMMANDER IN CHIEF, and I would add that this is probably the best Ryanverse novel after a long time. I enjoyed it so much, but now I am out of Ryanverse books. Can you perhaps share some info when is the next one supposed to come out? Keep up the good work, Mark!

I recently finished "Back Blast" and enjoyed it immensely. One question: Why use the phrase "jacketed expanding ammunition" when jacketed hollow points would have made more sense? Please pardon any variation from the actual text, I am quoting from memory and my memory is 69 years old.
Mark Greaney The term I use is Expanding Full Metal Jacketed ammunition. It's FMJ that collapses and expands- not hollow point. Here is an example-

Did working with Tom Clancy and on his series affect the way you approach your own work?
Mark Greaney Yes for sure- It made me more research oriented and the word count in my Gray Man books ticked up from 120k words before working with Tom to about 175k in my latest book! I have introduced more characters and intrigue, but this also has to do with my love of Clancy books- my first Gray Man book was about an even with a short 3-day timeline. Later books have been wider in scope so they got a bit bigger.

Greetings from the Middle East, Mark! "Support and Defend" was among the first books I read since I began my current deployment. Keep up the good work carrying on Mr. Clancy's (R.I.P.) legacy. I especially liked "Command Authority" and its timely relevance to current events in Russia and the Ukraine. So, is an ISIS-centered plot next up?
Mark Greaney Glad you enjoyed Support and Defend and Command Authority. COMMANDER IN CHIEF, will be out Dec 1- It's not about ISIS, but about Russia. Sure I'll be writing about ISIS before too long- they aren't going anywhere!

How long did it take before your first novel was picked up by an agent?
Mark Greaney I met the agent who would someday represent me in February of 2006 at a writers conference in San Diego. I gave him something of mine to read and he liked it but passed on representing me because he didn't think the story was something he could sell to an editor- he did like the writing, so he encouraged me to write something else. We stayed in touch and I gave him another book, which he also passed on. Finally, in February of 2008 he agreed to represent my book The Gray Man. He found a publisher in May of 2008.

When writing my first novel, I had trouble finding an editor that understood the action and adventure genre. How would you recommend locating an editor that understands the genre?
Mark Greaney I didn't find an editor myself- I found an agent who agreed to represent my book, and he promoted my book to about 10 editors, 9 of who passed on the book. Many editors to read unsolicited manuscripts, but an agent is a safer bet- they know which editors are acquiring what types of books, and who would be the best fit.

It's tough to get an agent, but in my case it worked out.
