Jim LeMay The eponymous character of the last novel, "Shadow Jack," interested me enough to continue following his story in the most recent "Shadowspawn."
Jim LeMay Greater writers than I am have answered this question. With advice from those giants just a click away I won't burden you with my whole list, just the rule that has served me best: Read. And keep it up. Study the greatest writers. From them you can learn to change simple and predictable plots to complex and intriguing ones and stiff dialogue to interesting exchanges.

But speaking of those masters, check out what they have to say about writing. I especially recommend Earnest Hemingway, John Steinbeck and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. A caveat concerning the latter though. Vonnegut preached vehemently against the use of the semicolon. While continuing to use it himself.
Jim LeMay I like the world where my stories take place. Writing about it and its inhabitants feels like I'm describing a real place. Since I can only explore it by writing about it you might say curiosity inspires and drives me. The people who live there are real too, of course. Many of them have become my friends though some have a maddening habit of taking the tale where they decide it should go.
