Jim LeMay is originally from Missouri, the land of Mark Twain, Yogi Berra, Walter Cronkite, Edwin Hubble, Robert A. Heinlein and many other worthies. He has lived in many other parts of the country so he has come to know his characters well. He has engaged in many of their vocations and avocations – homebrewer, bartender, waiter, land surveyor, civil engineer, land developer – and in some they have not: author, copywriter, commercial artist and others best forgotten. Jim now calls the Denver metropolitan area home.

From them you can learn to change simple and predictable plots to complex and intriguing ones and stiff dialogue to interesting exchanges.

But speaking of those masters, check out what they have to say about writing. I especially recommend Earnest Hemingway, John Steinbeck and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. A caveat concerning the latter though. Vonnegut preached vehemently against the use of the semicolon. While continuing to use it himself.(less)

Since I can only explore it by writing about it you might say curiosity inspires and drives me. The people who live there are real too, of course. Many of them have become my friends though some have a maddening habit of taking the tale where they decide it should go.

The New Pandemic

My concern about the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria inspired The Shadow of Armageddon . I first became aware of it some time in the mid-’90s when I read a newspaper article about a teenager in Mozambique with bubonic plague. (He, fortunately, recovered.) I thought that disease had been wiped out by antibiotics decades before. But perhaps it appeared in third world countries due to inadeq Read more of this blog post »
