David Burleyson Great question! The initial idea will just come to me, usually at the most random times. Then it's just a matter of brainstorming to develop the idea into a story. I find that asking myself questions helps.

As far as deciding if an idea is novel worthy or not - I feel like the idea will answer this question for you when brainstorming. Often times an idea that you initially thought would be a great book ends up just being a feature in another book idea.
David Burleyson Just write.
I know it's a cliche answer, but it's true! Just write anything to get your creative juices flowing. Don't worry about how it reads, no one else is going to see it.

David Burleyson I get the most inspiration when I'm talking with other writers about what we're working on. It's something I'm still building and getting better at, but surround yourself with other writers that you enjoy talking to.
