I'm slowly (very slowly!) writing a second book, this one about returning to a sport/hobby/passion I loved and participated in for many years as a teen and young adult--but I haven't been active in for many years (and a lot of pounds). It will be interesting to write my way through the journey of getting back in the saddle again.

So very many things give me ideas -- music, films, other books, magazine and newspaper articles, photos, nature, stories and situations I hear about. Sometimes that inspiration leads me to write, but more often I don't necessarily need or want to purposely "get inspired." I prefer to write regularly, and whether or not I *feel* inspired. That's just good writing practice, I think. The more you write, the more you find the motivation, interesting ideas, and impetus to keep going from the work itself.

Start writing! About anything you are interested in, the thing you can't stop talking about, the stuff you find endlessly fascinating or something you know nothing about but want to explore. Start from where you are. You already have everything you need to begin: a computer, or a notebook and pen. Once you get going a bit, take a class or join a writing group, seek feedback and listen to those who can help you. Always be learning. Those who publish are the people who know they can always improve and constantly seek to develop their craft.

I realized over time, as I was writing and publishing a lot of connected short pieces on a particular period of my life, that they might work together as a memoir. But then, all those pieces had to be revised and in some cases rewritten -- broken down really -- and integrated into a larger story, so there was a lot of new writing to do.

I don't give the idea of writer's block much serious thought. Sure, some days the writing flows better than others, and some days you just don't feel like writing, just like some days you don't feel like doing any other job, but you muddle through. Any words on the page is better than a blank page. Except the days when I decide the time might be better spent on research, reading, or maybe a nap.
