Angel Millar Ultimately, I probably got the idea for The Three Stages of Initiatic Spirituality: Craftsman, Warrior, Magician from my own practice of art/writing, the martial arts and physical training, meditation, Chi Gong, Kundalini, etc., which is itself a reflection of the classical education of most ancient cultures (the development of the peaceful arts, the arts of rhetoric, etc., and the arts of war (the martial arts, archery, wrestling, and so on)).

But I was also aware that the Craftsman, Warrior, Magician constituted the structure of ancient societies, and that, nevertheless, they are also embodied in more modern, even contemporary societies, such as Freemasonry (with its Craft or Blue Lodge degrees (Craftsman), Order of the Temple or "Knights Templar degree" (Warrior), and Rose Croix and Knight of the Sun (Magician). This intrigued me.
Angel Millar I would go to Arrakis, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert. Herbert created a science fiction world that is as archaic and ancient as it is futuristic. (Much of it is subtly influenced by Sunni Islam, incidentally.) I was especially inspired by the idea of the unnaturally and, in a sense, mystically glowing blue eyes of the desert people (Fremen) and the idea that some words have a sound that is equal to a form. I would explore this concept, along with the landscape and the ways of this strange people.
Angel Millar I usually work on two or three things at a time. I have a main project (such as a book that I'm writing) but I always have other works that I've started or that are in the ideas process. Often, if I'm going to work on something major that day, I will first tackle a work that's still in the ideas stage, either adding some new thoughts or editing a few things out.

This is something I do when I can't work on a major project, wither because I have "writer's block" (which is rarely the case) or because I have to do some research for it for a while. I switch to something that is less developed. When you switch to something more about ideas you get inspired. It helps you to think and to see possibilities. That's essential.
