Ted Anthony Roberts Hey, Harry! Thanks for the question.... Yes, it happens to me a lot. That's why it's best to read and re-read your works before showing them to anybody else. And even then, something can still slip through the cracks! If I have trouble with a sentence, or even a paragraph, a lot of times I will simply leave it alone for the time being, and take a fresh look at it a day or two later, or even a week later. At that time, you can have a fresh approach to the wording, and re-word it to make it sound better. There are times that things just flow from me quickly and accurate to how I feel about the situation, and other times I have to work really, really hard to make things sound just normal! Sometimes it's best to completely tear up what you did (just the sentence or paragraph - not the whole story!), and totally re-word it. If possible, have some family or friends look it over; and, if they have any literature in their blood, they might can even offer some solid advice.... Hope that helps....
Ted Anthony Roberts I leave that block for a while, and begin walking to another block! In other words, if I'm struggling with a story, then I might work on another, or start another writing project. Currently, I have over a dozen story ideas that I hope to see the light in the future!
Ted Anthony Roberts The self reward and satisfaction of a sentence or a paragraph that can speak to me!... Also, I love it when I no longer struggle with a story, and when it begins to write itself!
Ted Anthony Roberts Never give up on your dream; and write, write, write! The more you write, the better you get at it.....
Ted Anthony Roberts My next project is 'Sword Against the Robe.' This is set, like 'Adventures of Donaree' in seventeenth century France. The main character has a lot of issues, for he was subject to extreme abuse when a young man. His younger brother, now a priest in robes, comes to visit him ~ not to preach at him, or to rebuke him, but in hopes of giving him some peace that he is in need of. The elder brother, though, is very angry with God, and blames Him for all his misfortune - especially all the recent murder and mystery that has recently surrounded his life! Someone is out to kill him, and he cannot figure why. His younger brother hopes to help him before it is too late; but to the elder, it certainly is a war of sword against the priestly robe!
Ted Anthony Roberts My biggest inspiration was certainly Alexandre Dumas and his d'Artagnan romances... Especially 'The Three Musketeers.' My first novel, 'The Adventures of Monsieur de La Donaree the Musketeer' is a tribute to Dumas!
Ted Anthony Roberts My most recent book is "Captain Skull: From the Memoirs of Sir Charles of Riley," and I had actually wrote the first draft of the novel back in the late 1980's, which turned out to be about only 70 pages of hand written text. I have only, within the past few years, picked the story back up, and added a lot of details to the plot.... What initially inspired the story was Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe,' but more so was Rafael Sabatini's 'Captain Blood.' As for Defoe, I loved his narrative style, and I loved the swashbuckling action and time setting of Sabatini.
