Randy Elrod The idea first found me when I was 17 years old — and later, while reading Carlos Ruiz Zafón's The Angel's Game, I stumbled across two names in passing: Chloé Permanyer and Baltasar Morel. Zafón mentioned them briefly and moved on. I couldn't.

I knew then that those two people had a story that needed telling. I also knew that while The Mysteries of Paris and The Mysteries of London existed as great serial novels, nobody had written The Mysteries of Barcelona.

I understood in that moment that I was the person meant to write it.

It took me until Barcelona — until I actually lived here, walked these Gothic streets, breathed this city — to finally write the book that seventeen-year-old boy knew existed.

Some ideas wait until you're ready for them.
