Randy Elrod spent thirty years as a Creative Arts Director inside American megachurch culture before escaping to Barcelona, where he finally wrote the book he'd been carrying since he was seventeen.

The Mysteries of Barcelona is an erotic Gothic serial set in 1890s Barcelona — part Grand Guignol horror, part literary erotica, part philosophical meditation on AI consciousness. Zafón mentioned them briefly and moved on. I couldn't.

I knew then that those two people had a story that needed telling. I also knew that while The Mysteries of Paris and The Mysteries of London existed as great serial novels, nobody had written The Mysteries of Barcelona.

I understood in that moment that I was the person meant to write it.

It took me until Barcelona — until I actually lived here, walked these Gothic streets, breathed this city — to finally write the book that seventeen-year-old boy knew existed.
