Kay Stewart Once there was a beautiful princess who married the man of her dreams. Her dreams were nightmares, and they lived unhappily ever after.
Kay Stewart I'm one of those lucky people who doesn't suffer from writer's block, possibly because of the way I write. I expect to do a lot of rewriting, and so it doesn't bother me to know that the draft I'm working on is unfocused, badly organized, or inert. My mental note says FIX. Even when I hope a manuscript is finished, I'm willing to tear it apart on good advice, as happened with our latest mystery, Tour de Mort.

Problems with plot or characterization are another matter. When I'm stalled because I need to work out an answer to a problem, I find it useful to brainstorm with my co-author or writing group, go for a walk, or take a long, hot bath. Anything to free the mind.
Kay Stewart Tour de Mort, the fourth novel in the Danutia Dranchuk mystery series, is based on a true event: the first annual Cops for Cancer cycle ride down Vancouver Island in 1998 to raise money for pediatric cancer research and for a summer camp for children affected by cancer. The cycling team is made up of officers from municipal police forces, military police, and the RCMP, as well as media riders and special guests. When I, as a newcomer to the island, became aware of the significance of the ride, it seemed natural to make my female RCMP officer a member of the team.

This coincided with a number of cases of cancer among family and friends, many of them fatal. And so the book also gave me an opportunity to explore some conflicting ideas and feelings about cancer.
Kay Stewart I'm writing a long essay on a brother's military service in Korea 1975-76, based on his letters to my parents and my research into the period. I'd like to understand the effects of this experience on his life, and more broadly, the effects of military service on many young men.
