Joey Garcia "I don't need inspiration to do what I love. It's like dating: I'm available. I commit. I connect."
Joey Garcia "Stay curious, my friends! Revel in the quiet spaces of your mind and heart. Solitude is delicious. Savor it. Read widely. I like to walk down the aisles of a library, any section, and randomly select books that look interesting. Attend readings by people you have never heard of. Find a writing coach. Listen to your editor. Don't think of edits as insults. Fine editing is dusting, sweeping, window washing—everything is cleaner and clearer afterwards. Most important: surround yourself with honest people who love you enough to tell you the truth and not just want you want to hear."
Joey Garcia "Writing aligns me with my passion, my vocation and my purpose. It's a privilege to be a writer, to be paid for my writing, and to share my writing with others. I love the rhythm of words, the cadence of well-constructed sentences and the inner journeys that good writing inspires."
Joey Garcia I'm writing a novel based on my experiences as a news reporter. I've always written poetry so this foray into fiction is stretching every writing muscle I've got. A glorious challenge! I'm so grateful to have found two amazing writing teachers to guide me: Jane Anne Staw (author of "Unstuck") and Jodi Angel (author of "You Only Get Letters From Jail" and "The History of Vegas"). It's a delicious blessing when accomplished writers reach down to pull the rest of us up!
Joey Garcia I've learned to question my thoughts. It's taken me many drafts—in writing and in life—to arrive at the realization that good writing is the result of a clear thinking mind. My writer's block was the result of a mind muddled by half-truths, buried dreams and the projected fears of my parents and others who tried to warn me away from a writer's life.

Obviously it hasn't worked! For nearly 20 years I have written a relationship advice column for the Sacramento News & Review newspaper. I am also a published poet, essayist and author.

If you are struggling with writer's block, I recommend the book, "Unstuck: A Supportive and Practical Guide to Working Through Writer's Block" by Jane Anne Staw, Ph.D. Ms. Staw is a brilliant, insightful and kind guide out of the darkness and into literary freedom. So, write on! Someone will be healed, or inspired, or haunted by your poems, stories, essays and books. Maybe it will be me...
Joey Garcia From my readers!
I've written a relationship advice column in the Sacramento News & Review newspaper since 1996 and have fielded relationship queries live on television and radio for 20 years. Heartbreak is consistently the topic most people are struggling to understand and transform. I wanted to help people to see heartbreak as an invitation to grow in love. My book is a mix of true stories of broken relationships and mini-essays with prescriptive insights for healing.
