Write. Write. Write. And write anything. Your first serious piece of writing will be crap. Ok. Get it down on paper, edit it or toss it. The fact that you wrote anything proves that you can write something. And that you can write more. Use your own method to write, your own way to get words on paper. Understand that besides your own disbelief in your writing ability or your disbelief that you can write, your biggest enemy is Time. It takes time, and you'll always find a way to make Time to write. There is no quick method to complete a novel. So take your Time. Pre-write if necessary, but just write without expecting every sentence to be an award-winning phrase. Finally, understand it will take Time to edit and re-write. Take a deep breath and write, write, write.

Writer's block is a myth. At the very least, it's a misnomer. Writers are creative, and their minds are active. I find that I may pace or go on a drive or sit and stare at my computer screen while working through the next character action or plot point and may hesitate from writing until I have either a clear path ahead or a mildly vague one. Writers don't stare at the screen with their minds completely blank with no idea of what to write. Indecision and insecurity are mostly the cause for words not flying on to the page.

By going to bed...that's when my mind wanders, drifting between being awake and dreaming. If I fall asleep and dream, then the idea was just a dream. But if I lie awake for hours dreaming up the story, then I write it down.

I'm editing the first draft of "The Size of the Moon," a fiction series set in the modern world but with many mythological characters.
The first line is:
"He loved her. He had to kill her."

I deal with writer's block by...um...I forgot what I was going to say. I think writer's block is a myth. A better term might be: where the heck do I go now block. There are many hours when I'm sitting staring at the monitor without doing any typing. But that's just me playing out the many scenarios in my head and trying to figure out the best one to get from point A to B. Sometimes the best way to get typing again is by experimenting. I write it down, read it, then delete and try something else.

Being able to say "I'm an author," and look down my nose condescendingly at all the minions unable to form sentences (which are primarily my pre-school children).

Write first, edit later. Write the first book the best way you know how, whether it's planning it out with great detail, chapter by chapter, or making it up as you go.
