Word Blind (Kindle) unexpectedly combined two of my interests: Victorian Britain and learning disabilities. I trained as a Victorian scholar and wrote a biography of a Victorian photographer out of that expertise, but in the meantime life went on and my daughter was diagnosed with learning disabilities. I was curious about the history of their diagnosis and treatment so I started imagining what it would have been like to have had a reading disorder, for example, in the nineteenth century... and there was the germ for Word Blind.
