I more or less answer this in the 'What are ou currently working on?' question (see below) but as the book is a part of a series, the idea behind them all stemmed from my fascination with the part of France that is known as 'Basque country'. It's wonderful, do go and visit if you can! For (lots) more details about why the place is so interesting, plus photos, see different blogs from my website:

The big thorny horrible nasty question. It's comforting to know that most people get it. I think too that after experiencing it enough you learn to accept that one morning you'll wake up, and it'll be alright again. (Why?) I also agree with most writers when they say you just have to keep going and ignore the overflowing wastebasket. I like to observe babies learning to walk. They totter, fall over, get up, totter a bit more, fall and bang their heads, struggle up again. This is because they really really want to walk (then run, press forbidden buttons, pull pans out of cupboards, throw objects at windows etc etc. Sort of like the writing process...)

So many things, I'll just mention two, one is where you suddenly 'wake up' at your desk and find you have been inhabiting another world, another person, and what a sensation that is. Another big lift comes on the days you re-read what you wrote the prevous day and don't get the urge to tear it all up. And, go on, a third thing - you're writing because that's what you really want to do, aren't you? What a privilege.

This is a hard one because it's all about how to motivate yourself. The basic thing I guess is to keep reading, for inspiration, for learning how to do it right, and then I borrowed the advice of painter David Hockney, who stuck a hand-written poster on the wall in front of his bed saying 'Get Up And Work Immediately!' Brilliant.

I started a series of romantic novels in 2014. Books 1 and 2 are out, and I had started working on Book 3 (the last one). But then a sort of 'haunting' took place, where one of the unseen characters (who died before Book 1) appeared to be clamouring for attention. It was weird. There are more details in my January blog:

The result was I veered off course and am now doing the final revisions for a prequel to Books 1 and 2 which I hope to publish this month.

The biggest inspiration is reading. When I've finished something I really love (even books I've read several times) I get an urge to rush off to the computer and try to put into words all the ideas whizzing through my head...usually when I'm trying to get to sleep ;-(
