Laurette was born in the UK, near Brontëland. Graduating from the University of Leicester with a degree in English, she taught in the USA, UK and France, where she now lives.
Aged seven, her forays into fiction writing reveal her literary influences and distinctive style. ‘The Phantom Ghost Girl of Raven Castle’ begins: ‘‘Vicky Dare, the girl detective and her big Alsatian, Rex...”, then stops. ‘The Ruined Cottage’ is longer (“...it was a favourite haunt of mine and I never grew tired of it.”) In ‘The adventures of Carlotta’ “...she dashed to the door her face white with horror” while, surprisingly, in ‘The Secret at the Ball’ “...a secret compartment was revealed! I think too that after experiencing it enough you learn to accept that one morning you'll wake up, and it'll be alright again. (Why?) I also agree with most writers when they say you just have to keep going and ignore the overflowing wastebasket. I like to observe babies learning to walk. They totter, fall over, get up, totter a bit more, fall and bang their heads, struggle up again. This is because they really really want to walk (then run, press forbidden buttons, pull pans out of cupboards, throw objects at windows etc etc. Sort of like the writing process...) (less)

Another big lift comes on the days you re-read what you wrote the prevous day and don't get the urge to tear it all up. And, go on, a third thing - you're writing because that's what you really want to do, aren't you? What a privilege. (less)

"A gorgeous read.

I've read and loved Lindy Viandier's previous books, both memoirs of her life in France. This is something different: A novel, set in Italy, and Wales, I couldn't wait to read it.
