When I began working in the Center for Teaching Excellence at George Mason University, I read a lot about effective teaching practices, and I observed many of these in the classroom. I was interested, though, not in how these methods worked, but *why* they worked. This question led me to begin writing the book.

I held two pieces of advice, neither of which are original to me, very closely as I was writing: 1) write the book you want to read; and 2) saying "No" to a lot of good opportunities frees you up to say "Yes" to a great one.

I'm patient with myself and take significant breaks when this happens. Sometimes I'll just stop for the day, or sometimes I'll go for a run. I also break the project down into micro-sections and try to accomplish only that small piece every day.
