Elaine screamed with pain as the entity clawed at her chest and plunged a demonic claw inside her. Laughing, it held her pulsating heart for her to see before devouring it.

I'd like to travel to the post-apocalyptic world depicted in 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy.
Strange desire I know, but I've always been fascinated by a world with no, or few people. I think it stems from my desire to entertain solitude.

Strangely, 'm not a big reader!
But, I've read 'How To Live in a Van and Travel' by Mike Hudson. I have 'The 4-Hour Work Week' by Timothy Ferris next.

Hi Kate,
I believe the phrase is ‘If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked that question’.
Yes, I know, I kind of left that one open! It wasn’t intentional, I honestly didn’t realise when I wrote the book that I’d left Pockets in the middle of nowhere, both geographically and narratively!
Funny enough we exchanged emails this morning, I’ll be writing a post on my website about the cover photo for The Last Englishman and how it came about (it’s not actually me in the photo).
Pockets / Rockets moved to the Teton mountains. He battled illness after the PCT for two or three years, I think it was something to do with his illness on the trail, and it was pretty serious for a while but he’s OK now and running photography field trips for clients. He’s doing very well, and he’s happy.
Thanks for asking, I intend adding a chapter to the book called something like ‘Whatever happened to Pockets?’ – I think it’s warranted!
I’d really appreciate a review on Amazon if you could, and thank you very much for buying my book.

Hans Solo and Princess Leia! They have it all - romance (with everyone guessing), adventure and tenacity. All told in a wonderful story.

Hi Snicketts,
Determination would be top. You can have poor gear, be unfit and still make it. I'm not saying kit or fitness wouldn't help, of course they would but if your head is strong, it can overcome pretty much everything.

To sound really annoying, I’ve only experienced writer’s block a few times, and only for a couple of hours.
The advantage of writing non-fiction, detailing something I have actually experienced, is that I have my memories to draw on. When I go on an adventure I always write a journal because hopefully, I will return wanting to write a book. So, I have loads of notes that act as memory joggers which in turn, bring that particular day in the past back to me.
Writer’s block, obviously, is not being able to think what to write. Having these journals pretty much takes that out of the equation.

There are the obvious aspects such as working from home, being your own boss, and doing something creative.
However, for me, the kick always comes from knowing that other people will be reading what I’m writing. I want to relay my thoughts, experiences and emotions to the reader and to them offer them an escape.
Hopefully I inspire others to do the same, to follow their dreams.

It sounds a little cliché but the best advice I can offer is to never give up. Make no mistake, writing a book, at best, takes months. My first one took ten years! Keep at it, persevere and eventually your goal will roll in.
Have confidence in yourself and never think that you, or your book, won’t be good enough. Ever heard about the writer who hit it big time with their first book? Well, they they’ve thought the same thing.
Ignore the doubters, plug away in your spare time, and have faith.

To be honest, I’m not writing a book at the moment! A lot of my time is spent on my website and blog, and writing for outdoor publications.
I churn over ideas for adventures regularly and when one particular option keeps calling, that is the motivation for me to go and try it out, which gives me the subsequent material to write the next book.

I’m a non-fiction author so my inspiration comes from actual experiences. The writing process itself can be difficult at times but most of the time, it is fun relaying my adventures and carrying them over to book form.
Writing a book is kind of like long distance hiking, your goal is a long way off at the start but gradually, over the course of a few months, you near the end until eventually the finish is reached.
The end is where the rewards truly come.

My most recent book – Balancing on Blue, was the net result of actually walking the Appalachian Trail, a 2220 mile hike in the eastern United States. Spending several months out in the wilds is a huge endeavour and the perfect inspiration for a book.
