B.C. Brown Karaoke Jane, my latest novel and debut contemporary fiction piece, is based on my life. Many of the scenes and dialogue are taken straight from real life events. While not autobiographical, Karaoke Jane is probably as close to a slice of my life as I intend to ever write.
B.C. Brown I don't 'get inspired' to write. I just write. Writers who wait for inspiration to strike will never amount to much. To be a real writer, you have to put in the work; inspiration comes easily and doesn't require work.
B.C. Brown Stop talking and write. Talking about our writing is terrifically easy but actually writing is difficult. While it is perfectly fine to be excited about our worlds or projects, we aren't writers unless we actually find the time and motivation to sit down and write.
B.C. Brown Playing god! Seriously though...the best part of being a writer is being surprised by the depths of my own creativity and imagination. I've written characters and passages that shocked me because I didn't realize I could be that callous or insightful, but my character or scene demanded it so I could be. The whole process of writing can be incredibly insightful self-reflection.
B.C. Brown I don't believe in writer's block. I think a writer is either too lazy or too undisciplined to writer, therefore creating their own "block". Yes, a writer may have trouble working on a particular project (head not in the right place, difficulty getting the scenes to flow or come together properly), but they are not blocked from writing. They can simply choose to write something else. Writing is hard work that also depends on certain elements aligning at just the correct time for magic to happen.
B.C. Brown A general fiction novel entitled Feather in a Hurricane. It's about a woman putting her life together after divorce. Look for it Spring 2015.
