Introduced as "the weird one" their entire life, BC Brown adopted the badge of honor by spinning fantastic and off-kilter tales. BC struck a bold mark early in their writing life when, at age 8, they wrote their first novella about a possessed bicycle that ate bullies, and then another when they wrote their first novel about a teen girl willing to kill to go from an alternate to the active swim team at her school. ...more

Yes, a writer may have trouble working on a particular project (head not in the right place, difficulty getting the scenes to flow or come together properly), but they are not blocked from writing. They can simply choose to write something else. Writing is hard work that also depends on certain elements aligning at just the correct time for magic to happen.(less)

Seriously though...the best part of being a writer is being surprised by the depths of my own creativity and imagination. I've written characters and passages that shocked me because I didn't realize I could be that callous or insightful, but my character or scene demanded it so I could be. The whole process of writing can be incredibly insightful self-reflection.(less)

Why I Help the Homeless

I didn't grow up in a family that had causes. I was taught from an early age that you took care of yourself first, and then you helped others when and where you could. It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized that helping others was taking care of myself.

B.C.’s Recent Updates

George R.R. Martin
“The best fantasy is written in the language of dreams. It is alive as dreams are alive, more real than real ... for a moment at least ... that long magic moment before we wake.

Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?

We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I'd sooner go to middle Earth.”
George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin
“Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?'
'That is the only time a man can be brave,' his father told him.”
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Theodore Roethke
“Those who are willing to be vulnerable move among mysteries.”
Theodore Roethke, Straw for the Fire: From the Notebooks of Theodore Roethke

William Gibson
“To present a whole world that doesn’t exist and make it seem real, we have to more or less pretend we’re polymaths. That’s just the act of all good writing.”
William Gibson

Lemony Snicket
“Reading is one form of escape. Running for your life is another.”
Lemony Snicket
