Dave Cravens There is a longer answer behind this, which if you read my blog on my website, thegodthought.com, you'll probably find. But the short end of it that the journey started back at 9/11. It blew my mind that anyone in the world could look at the event and "believe" that was a good thing - and yet sadly - there were. It made me think and question my own beliefs. Did they hold water? Why do I believe what I believe? Why do others? Belief is a powerful aspect of being human. It could be THE most powerful aspect of being human. What we believe goes a long way to define us. So the book was more or less born out of those initial questions.
Dave Cravens I'm often hit with an idea that I just have to get down on paper. It something that nags at me until I do it. Where do the ideas come from? Everywhere. I'm inspired by my kids, my wife, my friends, life in general. Sometimes I scare myself with "holy hell, wouldn't it be terrible if X happened?" And then after I get over the scare, I realize that terrible thing would make a great story for some protagonist to overcome. It may sound rather contrived, but I spend a lot of time trying to think of ideas that haven't been exploited yet. What can my story or characters bring to the table that no one has seen or read yet? It's important to be able to stand out.
Dave Cravens Right now I'm doing my best to promote The God Thought - it's a steep hill to climb. I'm also working on the sequel to it, though I haven't done any appreciable writing on it just yet.
Dave Cravens You're better and worse then you think. Too many aspiring writers give up on their own idea and just stop writing altogether. Keep at it. But ready to receive honest feedback and know what to do with it when you're done.
Dave Cravens I do a lot of writing and work for video games these days. It's a lot of fun, and very collaborative. But writing my own stories gives me a chance to create without all the additional noise or influence. It's a much more personal experience. The best aspect of writing novels, however, is that barring extreme circumstances, it's something I'll be able to do for my entire life.
Dave Cravens A good drive often clears my head. I currently commute about 100 miles a day for my work, and I've found I do a lot of story creation in the car. It's a great time for me - there are no demands and no one can interrupt my thinking. If I get stuck on an idea even a short trip to the grocery store will change my perspective and jog it loose.
