It may not fit in the category of mystery but I work in the emergency management field and I've been deployed to many large-scale emergencies to provide various roles ranging from emergency shelter manager to disaster relief operations director. So many of my experiences could be included in a book.
What I have done is to take some of my expertise and compile it in a trilogy of disaster novels called the Lakedge Disaster Series.
My first one was called "The Return of the Spanish Lady" where my small fictitious town of Lakedge gets hit with an influenza virus resembling the Spanish Flu. I then wrote "The Curse of El Nino" this time striking Lakedge with everything climate change brought on to Canada. The third installment saw Lakedge crumble from the loss of the forestry mill which was the major employer in town and the economic impact is painted in "The Harness of the Riviera" because that's where the previous owner relocated.
In those stories, you will find a lot of suspense, a bit of conspiracy theories, a bit of romance, some scandals, many disagreements with a few fights, and possibly what you could call a bit of mystery. Try it out and let me know what you think.

I write on a part-time basis. If I don't feel like writing today, I don't. When an idea pops up, then I go for it. I rarely run out of ideas. I also constantly read both fiction and non-fiction so that I can glean ideas and concepts from others then turn them into my point of view or impressions.

I can manipulate characters and events as I want. I have full control over them. The real world has so many limits that my fictitious worlds don't have.

If you're in it to make money, forget it. If you love writing, then go for it. I don't write for others, I write for me because I enjoy it. If others like what I write, then it's a bonus and I am grateful for it.

I have a few projects on the way. I have a futuristic story about a time when resources are so depleted that the only people who get them are those that can be productive for society. The elderly, the sick and invalid, the unskilled are relegated to poverty and despair. The naive (and productive) hero doesn't see all of this until events cause him to wake up to reality and take up a fight to change the system.

My brain is constantly working. Funny enough, I often get ideas while I am lying in bed getting ready to fall asleep. At times, I even get up and go write down the synopsis for the idea I just conceived so that I don't forget it. Then I go back to bed. In the morning, I review what I wrote and start on the new idea.

I've read the Bible many times in my life and when I read, I try to put myself in the shoes (or sandals) of the person I read about. This idea got me to research more on the conditions in which people of the Bible lived. From that I created fictitious characters that would have mingled with prophets and kings of the time.
