My mother's family was a wonderful bunch of lunatics. Laughing and playing poker and telling stories of the past. How could I NOT write about them?

By reading a book by a great author. Currently I'm reading a book by biographer Stacy Schiff and her book about Ben Franklin while in Paris, trying to get the French government to help America in her fight against the British for independence. She is a maarvelous writer and funnier than all get out. I love some of her asides as she writes about the goings on between the three men (Franklin was one) dealing with the French. The book is called "A Great Improvisation." Boy does it give an insider view into how America became America.

I am writing about my mother's family who were vaudeville dancers during the 20s and 30s. It's a great story about a very hard life. Showbusiness was not glamorous!

Doing what I love best. I have been writing since I was ten years old and I love it!

Write about what intrigues you. It certainly doesn't have to be "what you know." I knew nothing about a Nazi POW camp in Phoenix during WWII, but when I read about it, I knew I had to know more about it and it led to a three-week trip to Germany and my book.

I guess I'm lucky. I rarely have writer's block. Maybe that's due to being a reporter first. One doesn't have writers block when on deadline!
