Probably my favorite fictional couple is Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind. I like that they are so human and fully formed as characters. We might all want to be lovable like Melanie Hamilton and gentlemanly like Ashley Wilkes, but the truth is, we're all far more messy and flawed, like Rhett and Scarlett. They are sexy and honest - or at least as honest as Scarlett can be with and about herself. But Rhett accepts Scarlett exactly as she is, and while there is no happy ending for them in the book, the reader can't help but feel that each is the love of the other's life.
