It started with a question: How did my mother, who was at death's door, survive Bergen-Belsen?
I discovered Glyn Hughes, the military officer most prominently associated with the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The more I learned about this compassionate leader the more I realized he was an important, fascinating, figure. Eventually, I chose to write a dual biography, telling the story of both the victim (my mother) and the Allied rescuer (Glyn Hughes) during the last year of WWII. It is a race against time story.

(view spoiler)[Bergen-Belsen in 1945 was the dumping ground for those who had already endured so much. Those who managed to evade the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau, who performed slave labor in concentration camps, and who survived death marches were now dying in droves in a place with no habitable housing, barely any food or water, and rampant disease.
