Goodreads asked Bernice Lerner:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Bernice Lerner It started with a question: How did my mother, who was at death's door, survive Bergen-Belsen?

I discovered Glyn Hughes, the military officer most prominently associated with the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The more I learned about this compassionate leader the more I realized he was an important, fascinating, figure. Eventually, I chose to write a dual biography, telling the story of both the victim (my mother) and the Allied rescuer (Glyn Hughes) during the last year of WWII. It is a race against time story.
