I was teaching Paul Gallico's Small Miracle to school children in rural South Africa - the Karoo. It was hard to explain to them who the Pope was, and where Rome is (let alone Assisi). BUT there are still working donkey carts in the Karoo, and I decided that theirs was a story that needed telling - and it would be much easier to teach.
They and Blikskottel was the result. It is an authentic tale, yet it is fiction, and I believe it gives readers a real glimpse of the unique lifestyle of this "Coloured" community.
