I am about to become an empty nester for a year because of unusual circumstances. Since my marriage, like many, has been centered around having children for so long, I wonder what this year will entail. I am both excited and nervous. Will we have anything to talk about? What will we do with the spare time? A story about rediscovering love.

I have writer's laziness. I force myself to write an hour a day at those times, and almost always, once the engine warms up, the car is ready to go. But if I have an excuse not to start writing, I will take it. I don't know why it's so hard to just get going! I'm the world's slowest writer as a result. But I am working on this. Truly. I read plotting books over and over again. Halfway through a chapter and I'm raring to go. Also, lots of coffee and chocolate feeds the muse. Most of the time though, I don't feel inspired when I start but about a half hour into it, I start to come more alive.

This is an idea I've had for more than 20 years, but was too afraid to write it. The idea was way bigger than my skill level at that time. I know something from This American Life sparked my imagination, but I honestly can't remember the root of the idea. I just knew it was too overwhelming for me to handle and so I jotted it down in a file and didn't look at it again until I had four manuscripts under my belt. Only then did I think that maybe I could handle the subject matter...
