I usually distance myself from the project for a time. Since I don't have hard deadlines to meet with a printer or publisher, I can set something down for a few days and work on something else.
Keeping a handful of projects available at all times works for me. If I'm not feeling up to delving into Pnumadesi for a while, I can look at the world through the eyes of an Awakened or travel the galaxy as a bounty hunter in the Birthright Universe created by Mike Resnick.

I get to tell people about new and fantastic things, and they respond to it. Really, hearing what others have to say (positive and negative) about my work means they have at least cared enough to read it and offer their opinion. That will keep me going even more than just my passion for it alone.

"Never give up, never surrender!" It's surprisingly kind of an old saying now (I feel old suddenly), but it's very true. Even if you haven't seen results either in the writing itself or the later (and more difficult part) of putting it out there for others, keep at it. Eventually, things will always work out if you're dedicated and love what you do.

As of July 2014, I'm finishing a Pathfinder (D&D) book of my own called Mystical: Kingdom of Monsters. I also have several RPG projects I'm head of/writing for with EnWorld and Samurai Sheepdog. I was working on a fun, sci-fi project with Evertide Games, but that's on the backburner for now.
Writing-wise, I just finished a story for Awakened Book 2 called "Change". I'm prepping for Book 5 of the Zen Chronicles in November. After that, I want to finish a book I'm ghost-writing for a friend and continue to add my own stories to the Awakened world of Grimaton.

My friends and family inspire me more than anything. The way we interact via all of the different mediums available to us, and the way I see them handle their lives provides me with how their personalities would resolve different situations. I just apply that knowledge to fantasy and the characters in the story and let them evolve naturally from there.
Also, I play, run, and design a lot of games related to fantasy and roleplay, so developing stories related to those and interacting through characters within them helps keep my creativity at 11.

My most recent book (Children of Destiny) was actually split into 2 (Born of the Elements and The Highborn King) to give enough focus to the individual characters. The idea was that I wanted to expand on what made the characters who they are; to give each a chance to grow. Since Zen is the youngest of them, he needed more "air time." With the group all in a place now where they can face the challenges coming up, I can prepare to write (The Third War of Elements) starting in November (as usual, I'm beginning during NaNoWriMo).
