I'd pick Maigret's Paris, from any part of the time range. Maigret always has such a fantastic time immersing himself in the cafes, bars and restaurants of the city and offers such wonderful observations of the people who populate it that I'd love to take a seat next to him and let the world go by as I sipped my house wine and picked my way through the vegan andouillettes (if you'll allow me that slight alteration).

The scariest thing I've come across in many a year. Brexit.

As I'm hosting an event with Chris Brookmyre this week at the Coastword festival, I've been immersed in his latest Parlablanes and have really enjoyed them. Now I've read three on the trot, I'd rather like to read more.
I'll be in France over the summer, so I'll definitely be tuning in to some Simenon - some of his Maigrets and some romans durs.
Another couple of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct will feature and The Whites by Richard Price.
Paul Auster's 4321 looks great, but might take more than a season to get through.
On my kindle, there's a pile of great recent releases I want to check out. Those by All Due Respect a pretty much top of my pile.

Hi Helen. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I'll have a look around and see if there's anything I can find out for you. There must be a simple solution out there somewhere and if I find it I'll get back to you.

I've just completed the edits for my publisher for a short novel set in Edinburgh. Now that's done, I can focus upon the sequel and hope that it does the first book justice.

Inspiration is something that appears from nowhere. It's only when a story has a genesis in the form of an idea. Once that arrives, I let the seed germinate until I'm compelled to write it down.

The idea for my recent book came while I was decorating my living room 20 years ago. I initially wrote it as a screenplay, did nothing with it and left it in a drawer. In 2013, I felt moved to turn the story into a novel and am delighted with the way it turned out. Most of all, I'm pleased that the characters were finally brought to life when readers around the world poured breath into them.
