Interesting question. As a matter of fact, my life was the basis for my writing THE MIDNIGHT SHRINK, a psychological murder mystery. The characters, including the protagonist, and many of the scenes were taken from my own experiences. I challenge you to figure out which scenes are based on actual events and which are complete fiction.

Nick and Nora Charles from the old radio show, The Thin Man. Love their playful interaction and banter.

Existential struggles are the life blood of a psychotherapist. Shattered Direction was inspired by a young man I treated many years ago. He struggled with his morals, on the one hand, and his desire to make money, on the other. What price do people pay when they give up on their essential self to pursue bling, money, and power?

So far I've been fortunate in not having experienced writer's block. Perhaps being a psychologist helps me avoid some of the common causes of writer's block. For example, I don't write to be famous or make money. I write because I enjoy writing and I only write when I have something to say. In other words, I don't push myself to write. It's pretty much the same as when I cook (which I love doing). I cook when I am hungry and, depending on what's in the refrigerator, I allow the inspiration to move me to create a dish - not a recipe.

I inspired by my patients. I have been a practicing clinical psychologist for 50 years and have listened to countless stories of pain and suffering. I have been inspired by my patient's courage as they struggle with their inner demons. My books are based on what I have learned from my patients, and my hope is that their stories will help others. Writing is way to reach more people than I could simply by consulting in my office.

I love writing stories from the vantage point of people most of us never get to know. They are invisible people to most of the world. My newest book, SHATTERED DIRECTION, tells the story of a young film maker who wanted to make documentaries, but get seduced by the glitz, money and drugs available in the pornography industry. He loses his sense of purpose and direction. The book takes the reader on his journey through addiction and redemption.

Write because you love writing, not because you want fame or fortune. When you have something to say, say it, and try to say it in the best way that you can.

Getting lost in the characters and story that takes on a life of their and its own. It becomes an alternative universe and I never know where the journey will take me.
