Creation and control. It's almost like lucid dreaming (have you been lucky enough to have that experience?), where you're the director of everything - the world, the characters, the action - and with no nasty real life consequences to deal with!
Sometimes, though, characters seem to have a mind of their own and run off, and you have to rein them in like naughty children. That must be a result of the writer's subconscious rebelling.
Overall, it gives one a deep sense of satisfaction to create, and I think this is true of most people, whether they're writers, carpenters, or chefs.

I'm a multitasker, so I usually have several stories on the go. I currently have 5 (yes, five) works in progress, two of which I work on daily. If I find myself bored of one, I switch over to another story and work on that for a while. It keeps things interesting :)
