All sorts of ways, as all authors do. I can be someplace and something or someone will go past and a line will pop in my head. Then I scramble to get it written down. Or, I hear or read something, and off I go, a story circling, sometimes so strong that even if I'm currently working on something else, I have to stop and write what's come into my mind. I think writers are somewhat different. We're always listening, with all six senses, and most of the time we're not even aware of it, until something strikes us :)

I read a cozy mystery for the first time while recuperating from an illness. I was delighted and decided I wanted to try my hand at a lighter genre. Then I decided, why not set it in Galveston? The island is practically at my back door and brings with it strong memories. And so I began the Southern Breezes series. First to release was Christmas on the Strand. Next up is Southern Breezes/The Verandah.

The Southern Breezes series. Soon to release, Southern Breezes/The Verandah. You'll be reintroduced to the group from Christmas on the Strand, along with Shelby Alexander, a NYT author who's found Boone Dawson on her doorstep and a ghost on her verandah.

Setting your characters free, putting them on a page, seeing them take life, and having breathed life into them, waiting to see if they do for others what they did for you.

It's a thrill, the first time you publish. It's a thrill the second and third time...the thrill never changes...but along with the thrill comes the marketing side. That, sugar, is a whole different ball game. That's the grind.

Sometimes, I let my Muse rest. I don't overly worry about it, because for me it's not really writer's block...it's finding the flow...the Muse and I usually meet on common ground, and then we're off like a rocket :)
