Ursula DeYoung Hi Summer - Thanks for reading Shorecliff! I chose to make my narrator a boy partly because that was simply the way I imagined the story, but also because in the 1920s the expectations for girls and boys would have been very different. I wanted Richard to idolize his Uncle Kurt and to clash with his father, and those relationships wouldn't have been possible (at least in the same way) for a thirteen-year-old girl in that era. I'm now working on two historical novels with female leads, however!
