Ursula DeYoung grew up in a small seaside town north of Boston. She studied History and Literature at Harvard and received a Ph.D. in History from Oxford. She currently lives in Cambridge, MA, where she spends her time writing and reading fiction, teaching at the GrubStreet Writing Center in Boston, working as a freelance editor, and editing the literary journal EMBARK (embarkliteraryjournal.com), which features the openings of as-yet-unpublished novels.

I chose to make my narrator a boy partly because that was simply the way I imagined the story, but also because in the 1920s the expectations for girls and boys would have been very different. I wanted Richard to idolize his Uncle Kurt and to clash with his father, and those relationships wouldn't have been possible (at least in the same way) for a thirteen-year-old girl in that era. I'm now working on two historical novels with female leads, however!(less)
