My favorite fictional couple is not from a book, but from a movie: Walter Burns and Hildy Johnson, from His Girl Friday, directed by Howard Hawks. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel play the roles. I love the witty banter and the love that shines through the constant bickering. Second place would go to Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man series.

Right now I'm working on a memoir about how helping my sister face a life-threatening illness transformed my life. You might not know it to look at me, but I used to be a womanizer with a violent temper—I used to get into fistfights with people. Fortunately, I was able to leave all that behind. This is the story of how I did it, and how love can help us overcome our personal shortcomings. This book will be out later this year.

There's an old saying to the effect that inspiration comes, but it has to find you already working or it turns around and walks away. That's how I see it. I get started because it's time to write; as I write, inspiration slips in and takes over. In my view, saying one is "waiting for inspiration" is self-delusional. You can wait your while life for inspiration to strike. I already have ideas for my next books. I'm not waiting for inspiration.

I guess I'm lucky, because I've never experienced writer's block. Perhaps it's because of all the years I've worked as a copywriter. Working as a copywriter teaches you to produce with a deadline, because the ads or promos are going out on a certain date, so you can't afford to be blocked. More often, what I have is too many ideas and too little time. Also, I'm an outliner, so by the time I start fleshing out chapters, I have already outlined the whole book and I have a good idea of where I'm headed.
