Kevin Revolinski Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, Godspeed by Nickolas Butler, Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles, Late City by Robert Olen Butler, and some older reads: Bel Canto, Kitchens of the Great Midwest, and surely many other random reads - a book a week, I hope.
Kevin Revolinski My recent collection Stealing Away has twelve stories, written over a span of years. I plan to blog a wee bit about each regarding each of them on my website KevinRevolinski.com. I may even pair them with beers (a nod to my other role as beer writer).
Kevin Revolinski Having just released my new short story collection, Stealing Away, I'm deep into what I consider the least enjoyable/most important part of being a writer: the marketing. Meanwhile a novel already at 100K words keeps tugging at my sleeve, begging for attention.
Kevin Revolinski In the middle of a work, I skip around to other scenes that at that moment might grab me or seem clear. I also might just put "garbage" down just to get words out. Nothing's permanent at that point anyway.

To get something new started? Take any old scenario, catchy phrase, even a random snatch of dialogue, and write it down. See where it goes. Often what happens is after a paragraph or even a page, something starts to take shape and direction. Plenty of stories and articles have started that way for me. The funny thing is, most of the time, I end up cutting out that bit that got it started. Like discarding a spent match by the side of your bonfire.
