Laurie Elmquist I'm reading Last Day on Mars by Kevin Emerson, The Whole Truth by Kit Pearson, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Holes by Louis Sachar, The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath, and I'm looking forward to reading Black Gold by Sara Cassidy and A Fair Deal by Kari Jones when they come out in the fall.
Laurie Elmquist Sometimes people will say things that inspire me to write, incidental things that spark some kind of idea. Other writing inspires me too. Sometimes I read a novel and I get this feeling, almost an impatient feeling that I'd rather be writing than reading. The passing of time inspires me to write. I'm aware that we only have so much time on this earth. I'd like to spend more time writing.
Laurie Elmquist The best thing about being a writer is slipping into that world of fiction and living there for a few hours. For me, everything else disappears except the story I'm working on. Sometimes as a writer, you have to solve a lot of problems. I like that experience of trying to figure out how to get my character to the next step.
Laurie Elmquist Make friends with other writers who will share the journey with you and celebrate its joys. They will also hold your hand through the hard times. They will write with you, talk about your characters as if they really exist, and just generally understand why you do the thing you do.
Laurie Elmquist I'm currently working on a series of books that feature a boy named Reece. The first book, aimed for 7-9 year old readers is called Where's Burgess? (Orca 2018). It's about a boy who has lost his frog and he goes around the neighbourhood putting up posters and talking to people. Everyone has a theory about what has happened to the frog and where he might be headed.

I've tried to include lots of humour for nine-year old Reece, as well as some struggle to understand life and its misadventures. His mom and dad are recently separated and he has to work through some of the changes that are happening around him. In addition, he's got this friend, Aaron who wears a bathrobe to school and can't ride a bike. It falls on Reece's shoulders to try to get Aaron through his phobia.

I hope everyone will enjoy meeting Reece and his family members and friends.
Laurie Elmquist My new book coming out April 5 is called Beach Baby and it's a board book for babies. I was on Maine Island, one of the Gulf Islands off the coast of British Columbia. It was spring and the island was so beautiful. As I roamed the beach, there were purple starfish and purple mussels. I saw a Canada goose with all its goslings. When I got home, a friend of mine was working on something called a baby board book. I asked her to show me some of them and I was struck by how beautiful and poetic they were. I had this idea that maybe I could write one too. I started to think about all those beautiful images I'd seen on Maine Island, and then I thought of some of the beaches I'd been to in California. I love the way the pelicans soar over the waves, and the way the sand pipers run up and down the beach looking for crabs. Those were some of the images I put together when creating Beach Baby.
