I watched a lot of TV programmes about people searching for long-lost relatives, or people who’ve been adopted searching for their birth parents. Most of these have happy endings, so I decided to do a different take on it, by having a main character who finds out his real parents aren’t at all what he was hoping for. In fact, what if his life and the lives of his family were suddenly put at risk, with possibly devastating consequences.

I read a lot and am fascinated by how each individual writer writes. I take note of what’s going on around me and love creating stories that I hope people will like. A good book always inspires me to try to emulate the author, although always in my own style.

I’m currently working on a book about a middle-aged man who on his mother’s death bed discovers he’s adopted. The story is about his search for the truth, amid many obstacles along the way. It’s called ‘A Sense of Discovery’ and should be out in June.

Write what you like, edit, edit. Get it proofread and edited. Spend a bit of money on a great cover. Persevere, listen to constructive criticism, promote whenever and wherever you can. And never never give up

The best thing about being a writer is that your destiny is in your own hands. You are able to create whatever you like, the characters, the story. And you stand or fall by your words. It’s fascinating to see how your own work evolves. I never know how the story will end until I write it.

I don’t suffer greatly with writer’s block. If I ever get stuck on something, I leave it for a day, go back to it and usually find I can resolve the problem.
