Katherine L. Holmes One day I wore an heirloom ring of my grandmother's, took a long bus trip from Minneapolis to St. Paul, and when I got back, saw that the jade stone in it had fallen out. I thought I lost it somewhere in my day. Not long after, I went to the front of my building to let my cat in. I saw the jade stone in the grass near the walk-up sidewalk, and below the window of a person in my life then. Paranormal mystery?
Katherine L. Holmes I couldn't decide between two couples in literature. I have to say Bathsheba and Gabriel in Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. The book is a favorite because of Bathsheba's disillusionments with men and how she realizes her love for Gabriel. He went through a misfortune that forced him to work for Bathsheba, a woman with a farm. She has a modern stance while he represents a presence in her life and a growing relationship.

My other favorite couple is Alexander and Hannele in The Captain's Doll by D. H. Lawrence. I like this novella for the tension between the couple and the modern working out of their relationship. It is a charming story with subtle humor between the two characters.
Katherine L. Holmes My newly published book is Claude: A Dog of the Sixties. The answer to this question is easily answered - Claude is based on the standard poodle from my childhood. However, I placed the fictional dog in another family. The book has a boy protagonist, besides Claude.
Katherine L. Holmes Usually from an experience that had an effect on me, either my own, something I witnessed, or something I read about and then researched. Almost always, it is real life that inspires me, sometimes trauma, sometimes the road I didn't take, sometimes a puzzle that I would like to sort.
Katherine L. Holmes At present, I am compiling a nonfiction book of my grandmother's diaries, 1906 to 1958. I'm writing historical narrative and selecting entries to make her entries more accessible to readers. I think about future creative projects but I have meant to do this for years.
Katherine L. Holmes Write about what you care about; write about what you know. Don't be upset if the work takes time and if it isn't like another author's success. Keep tabs on a project, even if you have a new one. Authors need to revise and sometimes they need a break from a project to see the work that is needed. It's best to do your best before submitting a project.
Katherine L. Holmes The experience of reading, only heightened. I like the alternative reality, the concentration on a subject or place that I like, and character issues that I would like to work out.
Katherine L. Holmes I will "free-write", write about characters or the next chapter. I might research or look into detail about the setting or the characters. Usually I try to write as much as I can. Sometimes the problem has to do with real life, and a writer can be patient with themselves and let things go for a day or so.
