Goodreads asked Katherine L. Holmes:

Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?

Katherine L. Holmes I couldn't decide between two couples in literature. I have to say Bathsheba and Gabriel in Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. The book is a favorite because of Bathsheba's disillusionments with men and how she realizes her love for Gabriel. He went through a misfortune that forced him to work for Bathsheba, a woman with a farm. She has a modern stance while he represents a presence in her life and a growing relationship.

My other favorite couple is Alexander and Hannele in The Captain's Doll by D. H. Lawrence. I like this novella for the tension between the couple and the modern working out of their relationship. It is a charming story with subtle humor between the two characters.
