Go for a walk. Draw a picture. Talk to myself. Talk to my friends. Force myself to free write. Stepping away from the computer seems to be the best thing to get the creative juices a-flowing. The moment there's no longer the cursor blinking at me, I suddenly feel free.

Being able to make random comments with other writers when out having coffee like "oh man, I can't believe it, I had to kill Juliette today. I tried to save her, I really did, but... well... it was just not meant to be."
Also, having the characters come to life in your head, developing personalities and finding out where their adventures might take them.

Read a lot, then write a lot. Your first book will probably be crap. Don't throw it out (at least not yet), just put it somewhere out of sight and mind so that when you are later feeling frustrated at your more recent writings you can pull it out, read over it and go "you know what, I've really improved."
And write your story for yourself - not for a specific target market, but yourself. Because if you like it, chances are someone else will too.

At present I am working on (aka banging-my-head-against-a-desk) the second book in the Lemur Saga.

Often I will go on walks and talk to myself. Sometimes I will have mental conversations with the characters, other times just plot out points and store them in my brain. I am really bad at writing things down, however.

My inspiration for my "Lemur Saga" came from a holiday to Madagascar, my general love of lemurs, a disappointment in the movie "Madagascar" and a love of epic fantasy.
