I don't. I'm from the Jim Butcher school of thought on this topic: I don't have a muse, I have a mortgage.
I treat writing as a job. Even if I don't feel like it, I need to be a professional and still get the work done. If that means I only get a few hundred words in instead of a few thousand when I don't have a lot of inspiration, tough luck. You want to write? Sit your butt down in the chair and hit the keyboard, one letter at a time.

The total freedom to write about whatever you want, in whatever way you want. Publishing is going through a revolution right now and it's never been a better time to be a writer. I enjoy every minute I spend behind the keyboard.

When I'm a big enough writer, I'll feel qualified to give that kind of advice. For now, I'll repeat what Loren told me:
- Don't write for money, write the best book you can and then write the next one.
- Learn the craft but also learn the business. It's not either-or.

I wrote a blog post last year titled "8 self-defense tips for men" and it got a huge amount of traffic, comments and shares on the internet. http://www.wimsblog.com/2013/04/self-...
I didn't expect this to happen, but for some reason this article seems to have struck a chord with a large audience. So I decided to expand on it and write a book with the article as a basic framework. I'm about half-way through now.
At the same time, I'm collecting data for three other self-defense and martial arts books while also taking a few breaks now and then by writing horror short stories. Those are an insane amount of fun to write.

I wanted to "do something on the internet" many years ago and started a martial arts/self-defense site just for the fun of it. One of my articles caught the eye of one of the great men in this niche, Loren W. Christensen. He liked it and asked if I wanted to write a book together. At first I was floored by the offer. Then a bit scared: Was I good enough?
I decided to take the plunge and it was a lot of fun, which made me keep on writing. Loren ended up writing three books together and I wrote some smaller pieces for several of his books as well.

My last book was a collection of my most popular blog posts from hen I first started blogging. I got the idea after realizing that due to the nature of blogs, lots of content, good content, gets buried underneath more recent entries. For many visitors, those articles stay buried unless they spend hours on end clicking through page after page in the archives. Instead of making them go through that grueling reading process, I decided to publish those articles in book form for convenience.
I rewrote and edited them to make them better, but also asked a few other self-defense and martial arts authors for some articles. That way the book has some bonus features not found on my blog.
